A Glimpse into the Past
The Pennines area has a rich and varied history. Early humans, Celts, Romans, Saxons and Danes all left their mark here.
In 1898, a round barrow was discovered on Hades Hill. It contained a two-tier funeral urn.
A Celtic neck ornament, known as a torque, was found near Littleborough in 1832. In 1793, part of a Roman silver statue was unearthed at Tunshill quarry.
A paved road over Blackstone Edge is thought by many to be Roman. It’s a straight line rising over the landscape.
